(It has been a long time!)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These pictures aren't in order, but can tell a little bit of what has been going on with us recently!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Early in January, we enjoyed a visit from Kevin Koch, Kim Ayars, and Tim Schaefer. We had sukiyaki together on Saturday night, went to the onsen after church on Sunday, and then they toured Akihiro's clinic before continuing on in their travels!</div>

<br />
Kotaro came to our home over winter break to study! He "holed" up in our attic and studied about 10 hours every day. He is studying for his college entrance exam. The studying that is required for these Japanese tests is phenomenal! Kenji and he are good buddies!<br />

<br />
We went to Great Grandma Ito's for New Year's holiday. It was nice to see Masahiro and Eriko Honna again! We had been to Hong Kong for their wedding last year.!<br />

The new Shioda church is well underway! This picture is from a while back. Now the siding is going up. We have only 3 more Sundays in the old church so are busy trying to get out all the things we want to keep. Thankfully we are done picking out wallpaper, flooring, etc! I am looking very much forward to indoor toilets and a baby room on the first floor (our current baby room is up a dark narrow stairway with no handrail).<br />

We enjoyed having Parker Dill's Flat Stanley with us for a while. Here we are showing him Sky Tree, the highest tower in the world. It was just finished last summer. This is the view from Grandma Ito's house.<br />

Here's Kenji in his clothes that I found while going through my parents stuff. I'm pretty sure my brothers wore this when they were babies. The little plaid pants have rubber lining on them. The two piece thing, though, wasn't nearly as practical as the onesies we have today, I noticed!<br />

This bouncy seat (below) from Akito and Marie has been wonderful. Kenji likes to supervise Tomoki playing and follows us all around with his bright little eyes. He continues to be a very easy baby--Akihiro's mom said he is just like Akihiro was when he was a baby--content as long as he was fed and slept a lot. Kenji will really "talk" a lot if spoken to and it is so cute.<br />

We enjoyed a visit from Gen Shinozaki and his daughter Momoka--missed you, Eri! Tomoki warmed up to Momoka pretty well and they played together pretty good. He is a pretty shy guy and usually won't play with other children, so I was surprised--and pleased! I've noticed he does better with one other child versus a group. <br />

Tomoki has been a very good big brother. Once Kenji started being more communicative and "cute", we noticed that he wanted to be held more, fed more, and generally acting like a baby (arrggh!). He even told me one day that he wanted to be a baby again! Things are a little better now, but there were a few weeks where my patience was severely tested and most of the time found wanting. This parenting responsibility, though many times joyful, is not an easy one. On the joyful side is Tomoki's frequent questions about heaven and God. The other day when we were working in the garden--he with his road grader (circa Ehnle's children's childhood) and me pulling weeds--he looked up in the sky at a beautiful cloud and said, is that heaven up there? Other questions include, "Does God and Jesus take ofuro (Japanese bath)"? He is certain that heaven has a sandbox, puzzles, and toys. On the lighter side, he likes telling Mama "don't worry, Mama" (usually if he has spilled something on his clothes or something), or if I am frustrated about something not going how I want it to go. I really do appreciate his advice! The other thing he says recently is "Mama, say, 'ma, iya'" I am probably butchering the Japanese of that, but it means, "oh well". Usually he says this if he wants me to give in and let him do something I have already told him he can't do. I have said that recently in regards to teeth brushing. After trying many different things, I have resorted to showing him a short you tube clip of excavators working while I brush his teeth--ma, iya!<br />

Sorry to be so belated to post pictures! I have tried to make it a habit not to be on the computer while Tomoki is awake, so it has really cut down my computer time because sleep, housework, and Kenji have taken priority! Tonight, though, my two biggest boys--Akihiro and Tomoki are at the summer fellowship meeting. They left this morning and come back tomorrow afternoon. I had a "power day" getting lots done and making phone calls (those are hard to make too now that I have two little distractions!) Kenji continues to be a very good baby--sleeps a lot--for which I am very thankful! So different than Tomoki in the sleep department! I am kinda trying to follow the Baby Whisperer technique and have found it very helpful. I don't mean any disrespect to my dear departed grandfather Willis, but Kenji Willis definitely takes after one of his namesakes in the volume of his bodily functions! Anyway, here are some pics and videos--not always in the greatest order. :)</div>

We miss Javon! She returned back to the US, but as the Lord opens doors, she hopes to return. We also miss her photography. Here are some links to posts she did with pictures of our family--mostly Kenji!<br />

Just born--I think he kinda looks like Grandpa Willis Sauder in this picture a little bit. Dr. Akihiro attended the c-section, cut the cord, rubbed off Kenji-kun, and counted toes and fingers! There aren't words to describe the emotions of meeting one's baby the first time!<br />

Tomoki was kinda scared of the baby at first because he was crying, but as soon as Kenji started chugging the bottle and quieted, he wanted to help. Now we are basically breastfeeding and it was hilarious to see Tomoki immediately pull up his shirt to check out his anatomy!<br />

<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
As I sort through my contacts, it is hard to know who to send our message to, so please excuse me for perhaps over publicizing!</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
A dear little baby boy, Kenji Willis Ito, was born by c-section today (June 14, 2012) at 14:52. He weighs 3060g(6lbs12oz) and height 50cm(19.7 inches) . His name is pronounced like the American name Benji, but with a "k". There are two Japanese characters (kanji) that make up the name. The first, "Ken" è³¢ is "kashikoi" meaning wisdom (a different kanji, from Tomoki's Tomo, but also in the Bible). The "Ji" kanji is "naoru" æ²» which means "healing". We hope and pray that little Kenji can be blessed with the wisdom of the Lord and that his presence in the world will be a healing one--not necessarily that he would enter the medical field:), but that 1) others can see in him the spiritual healing that only comes through knowing Jesus Christ as Savior and 2) he can lead others to spiritual healing in Jesus Christ. His middle name is that of two special people, Willis Ehnle and Wills Sauder. As many of you know, Willis Ehnle started our church here in Japan and lives a zealous life for the Lord. Willis Sauder, was my grandfather and he was also a godly man whose motto (even in his old age) was often said to be "you gotta cut new ruts!"--meaning not always take the same road, but learn new and different ways. God alone knows the future for little Kenji and we trust him to Him!</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
Tomoki has quickly become Tomo-kun as is the Japanese tradition to shorten the name and add "kun" for boys. Personally, though, I like Kenji-kun the best, but if it must be shortened, I guess I like Ken-chan better than Ken-kun. (Chan can be added to Japanese names for children--both boys and girls).<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
A special thank you to those who lifted us up in prayer!<br />

Carrie and Akihiro</div>Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-9341090828440193382012-06-13T03:37:00.001-07:002012-06-13T03:37:32.085-07:00Waiting for BabyNow that I'm in the clinic where I am scheduled to have baby boy by c-section tomorrow, my "nesting" has turned to the computer and emails, updates, etc.! <br />
<br />
We enjoyed a Japanese BBQ in our "backyard" a couple of weekends ago. See Javon's blog for some pictures. <a href="http://onegreenbicycle.blogspot.jp/2012/05/barbecues-onsens-and-malaysian-curry.html">http://onegreenbicycle.blogspot.jp/2012/05/barbecues-onsens-and-malaysian-curry.html</a> We also got to enjoy the yummy malaysian curry she shows--thanks to Biren-san!<br />
<br />
Other than that, Akihiro has been busy preparing for the opening of a clinic in Saitama-ken--about an hour from our home. It is kinda a long story how he got this opportunity, but it has been a good learning experience. He will work there part time in addition to his other various jobs. He has always dreamed of opening his own clinic when he retires, so this opportunity is teaching him how to do it--at someone else's investment! It opened this week and everything is going smoothly and we are thankful!<br />
<br />
I was nervous how Tomoki would do with me going into the clinic, but my prayers were answered today when he did just fine with Grandma Ito putting him down for his nap and saying goodbye at the clinic today. He's probably doing better than me about the whole separation thing! C-section is set for between 2 and 3 PM tomorrow, Thursday. The staff here is so nice and I ate a wonderful meal tonight. I am thankful that my Japanese is much better than the last time I was here, but know that under stress, my Japanese tends to fail me pretty quickly. <br />
<br />
Here's a few pics of the soon to be "big brother" sporting his "safety goggles"--apparently necessary for drinking milk and playing with Papa's remote control helicopter!<br />

June 14th it is--unless he decides to surprise us and come early. He appears to be a big baby--in the 96th percentile according to sonogram. My belly size would indicate that this could very well be reality--I am running out of clothes that fit decent! We've decided on a name--a bit of a challenge to pick a Japanese name that can be pronounced fairly easy by the English speaker. It is fun, though, to pick out the meaning of the kanji and middle name.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); color: #222222;">The other big news at our house is in the potty training department! After a week of seemingly no progress and no awareness that he was going pee, Tomoki suddenly started getting it! Perhaps it was helped by the fact that one day at the park, there was a big group of kindergarten children playing there. We had to get in line for the swings, etc. Tomoki did well getting in line and when they said to line up for the toilet, he wanted to go too. The new accomplishment has been a big boost to his self esteem and he seems extra happy these days. The smile he gave me when he could do it made me feel happy to my core!</span>
</span><br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); color: #222222; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); color: #222222; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Otherwise, we have our garden planted. Tomoki loves digging in the dirt, so I really have to watch him so he stays in the area I gave him instead of digging up my vegetables. He can dig for hours! His vocabulary and memorization skills continue to amaze me--both in Japanese and English. He talks to Akihiro 90 percent Japanese and to me in 95 percent English I would say. He loves it when I agree with him and when I hesitate, he says, "Mama, say, 'That's right!'"</span><br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); color: #222222; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); color: #222222;">We have been enjoying having Javon Steffen living down the street in the Klaus's house. She is studying Japanese and seeing about the possibility of long term service here in Japan. We've really put her to work with moving things out of Shioda church storage, planting garden, etc, but most of all we have appreciated her spiritual encouragement and inspiration. She has become friends with Tomoki and has got some pretty good shots of him--you can check out some of them on her blog. My favorite is at the bottom of this post--slurping noodles! </span><a href="http://onegreenbicycle.blogspot.jp/2012/05/golden-week.html">http://onegreenbicycle.blogspot.jp/2012/05/golden-week.html</a></span><br />

These pictures aren't in the greatest order, but can tell you a little of what has gone on here recently. We were honored to have Willis and Lois Ehnle stay with us several nights during their stay in Japan. It was great to just sit and visit with them very comfortably--just like old times!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFlLSut7lTDsMFmZpafijciG3sDF1prEv3AEVBqn9KqbyTLospit8KpEHp6kexUek79caxC_d5NsJtHZyBhHhAlkobJEG_HbGe45VqWeJxNMgZul8XKpH3v9sB2dzWcNX3qtpIioiXybw/s1600/IMGP0944.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFlLSut7lTDsMFmZpafijciG3sDF1prEv3AEVBqn9KqbyTLospit8KpEHp6kexUek79caxC_d5NsJtHZyBhHhAlkobJEG_HbGe45VqWeJxNMgZul8XKpH3v9sB2dzWcNX3qtpIioiXybw/s320/IMGP0944.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Tomoki helped me make cookies for White Day--the return day of Valentines day here. On Valentines Day, the girls give to the guys. Akihiro always gets cookies from the pharmacists at one clinic where he works, so we made cookies for him to give in return. I had never tried dark chocolate and mint chips, but somebody had brought me some from the US and--ooh, were they yummy! I was reminded of why I don't make cookies and sweets much--they don't last long--and I am the problem!<br />

While Ehnle's were here, the cherry trees were just beautiful and we had a picnic down by the river near our home with Noriko Mizuno-san and her little girl--friends of the Ehnle's. There was a lady who saw Tomoki and Noriko's little girl throwing rocks in the river and asked if she could take their picture. She was really into it and had a nice camera. I asked her if she liked taking pictures of children and she said she was in a photography club and yes, she loved it! I have been looking for someone like this! I asked her if we could hire her to take some pictures of Tomoki at our house or at the park another time--as we didn't really like our studio experience a year and a half ago, and neither Akihiro or I are very good at photography. She was overjoyed and sent me a CD of some of her shots from that day! Can't wait to meet her again!</div>

We have been battling sickness around here off and on. I had a cold and thought I was over it, but it came back with a vengeance and now poor Tomoki has it. It was wonderful to be warm again and do some shopping. Most people hit up the brand stores, but for me it was the grocery store, Motherhood Maternity, and Kmart! The grocery store is the most tempting. I fell for some pop tarts and have already devoured them! I can't even let myself go down the cereal aisle! Anyway, here are some pics of recent days/weeks.<br />

I think he thought it was going to always be snow! Once he got into shoveling, though, I couldn't hardly get him to stop. I was cold, and kept asking him if he was "daijobu" (ok) and he said he was ok and that he was working hard! It is funny to see him scoop snow onto the concrete because that is what they do here in Japan. Everyone puts the snow onto the road to melt! There's no other good space!<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j-pOU75KP0Q?fs=1" width="480"></iframe>Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-70219576524861499182012-01-17T01:21:00.000-08:002012-01-17T01:21:13.744-08:00Can make commentsI didn't realize I had somehow shut off the ability to make comments on this blog. Finally able to get to update this blog. I am finally feeling better as far as pregnancy goes. Recently visited the clinic and all looks well--baby is 14 cm long! Tomoki says he has a baby in his tummy too!</div>

Here's Tomoki trying out his training chopsticks. It didn't go so well. He prefers his fingers--even over spoon and fork! It's kinda funny--if he can't do something, he says he is "too big". Today at the park, he said he was too big to ride on the swing by himself. He told Charity K. he was too big for her to pick up too!</div>

Christmas was extra special this year as Tomoki could talk about Jesus' birth and play with the little manger set that was my family's. <br />

At the beginning of December we made a trip to China. We arrived in Beijing one evening and met Li-san and Chi-san and their daughter Jin-Lin for supper (also Li-san's brother). It was wonderful to see Li-san united with his wife and daughter. He seems to be doing well in China, though is very busy with business trips. When asked about what he misses about Japan, he didn't hesitate and said, "the church people".<br />

The next morning we flew to Hong Kong. We went there because Akihiro's cousin was getting married. The flights were made more tolerable by some discreet use of the IPad and watching Shimajiro (a Japanese children's learning tiger) and youtube excavator videos! Really, though, Tomoki was a little trouper with our tight travel schedule.<br />

In addition to the IPad, his trucks got a lot of use. We weren't able to attend the wedding, but attended a reception dinner the night before. Tomoki kept our table entertained with his skilled use of his cherry picker, etc.<br />

Back home to Japan the next day. The next week Tomoki and I took the train out to Yamanshi to meet Akihiro for lunch and visit some friends out there. I thought Tomoki looked quite dapper in his little hat!<br />

During Christmas break, Koshin (9 years old), from our Shioda church came to spend the week with us. He is a great kid and we had a nice time with him. He and Tomoki are best buddies and Tomoki learned so much from him. His Japanese language skills grew in leaps and bounds. Some things I wouldn't have cared if he didn't learn....One morning my nose was a little stuffed up and my voice sounded funny. In Japanese it is called "hana goe" (nose voice, I guess). Koshin started plugging his nose and saying "hana goe des". Tomoki followed suit of course. Well, it was fine for home, but when we joined Marie I. for lunch at a restaurant that day and Tomoki was hollering "hana goe des" in a fairly load nose and plugging his nose, I was a bit embarrassed! Oh well! It's interesting to see his language develop. One day he saw me cutting up some strawberries for our dessert and said to Akihiro, "strawberries". His pronunciation wasn't the greatest, and Akihiro thought he said cabbage. He tried again, "no, strawberries!". Poor Papa still didn't get it, so Tomoki sighed loudly and said, "Papa, ICHIGO!!!" (That is Japanese for "strawberry".) <br />
Actually, Koshin ended up coming back one week later for a week because his grandfather in Malaysia passed away and his mother went home for a week. I put him to work and was able to get some extra things done while he was here. The below picture was taken at the zoo. Akihiro took the boys to the zoo one day and I had some blissful hours to myself!<br />

The little accessory for my purse was given to me by the city where we live. It says, "there is a baby in my tummy". We get the little accessory when we get our booklet for pregnancy and child development. In Japanese healthcare, Akihiro feels like this is a very good thing. Each child has a book that is taken to the doctor from prenatal to school age health information--immunizations, height, weight, etc. Anyway, back to the accessory--they are all pink, so to those of you who thought it meant we were having a girl.....you'll have to wait a bit longer for that bit of news. I'm not sure exactly what the purposes of the accessory are, but if you flash it to someone on the train, they will usually give you their seat--kinda handy! <br />
I am going to the same local OB clinic where Tomoki was born--Shibata Clinic. The doc speaks English well, the staff is nice, it is close (7 minutes by bike?), and I know basically what to expect there. That clinic doesn't do VBAC, so we will be scheduling a c-section. I'll find out more about that on my Monday appointment, I guess.<br />
As far as how I am feeling....to be honest, pretty crummy. I have that first trimester fatigue, nagging nausea, excessive saliva, strange dreams, and not the greatest sleep. Big burps are reasons for rejoicing! I haven't been a very patient mama for my teething two year old, but I am hanging in there thanks to my good hubby's help and support.<br />
Next week we are off to Beijing for one night to see Li-san and his wife and daughter and then to Hong Kong for Akihiro's cousin's wedding reception. I'm hoping and praying that our travels go well.Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-6525403880154986582011-11-23T14:36:00.001-08:002011-11-23T14:37:15.075-08:00A new accessory for my purse<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is a view from the top of the ropeway station at Miyajima--we had a beautiful day--and good company, as you can see below. Akito and Marie, Ed and Jenni Schwartz, and Mark and Bev Bahr and we went by bullet train to Hiroshima for one night. It was a blessed time--I got a good share of American humor--miss that sometimes!<br />

On other happenings, we attended a wedding of a friend of Akihiro's from middle school. It was a chapel style wedding which is getting to be more popular here in Japan recently. I was slightly shocked to see that the person marrying them was American. He did some of the very short service in English and read some stilted Japanese for their vows. Well, they got married, anyway. The harp music was gorgeous, but it seemed quite interesting to be singing the "Christian Home" at a non Christian's wedding. After the wedding there was quite a reception with lots of speakers. The bride changed her clothes--a different ballroom style gown. I guess this is normal--sometimes they might even change clothes twice! Nevertheless, it didn't make me dissatisfied with my own simple wedding.<br />
<br />
Tomoki continues to speak an interesting combination of Japanese and English. This week he overheard Akihiro ask me (in Japanese) when I was going to cut his hair. Tomoki said "hair cut" to me in English. It is amazing to see his little brain process these languages. (Speaking of hair cuts, I gave Tomoki one and somehow he looks a lot like my dear departed Dad!) Of course, we think he is terrible smart! :) He loves doing puzzles recently--his favorite being the power shovel one, which he has done so many times that now he can do it on his own. <br />

I finally got my fall/winter garden planted...daikon, turnips, spinach, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, bok choy, and red radishes. I hope it does ok as I am kinda late getting it planted.Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-49130935036342977942011-10-19T22:51:00.001-07:002011-10-19T23:08:07.590-07:00Cosmos, Tomoki's birthday<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium; ">We had a holiday last Monday and so we went with Manuela and Akito and Marie to a local park--Showa Kinen Koen. The birthday party was a great success. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">All of the Ito family except Aunt Yaeko and Uncle Shiochi were here. I had had a cold for two days prior--meaning I was cleaning house with a kleenx stuffed in my nose (which Tomoki didn't like at all!). The Lord answered my prayer, though, and it was much better by Saturday. I was also worried about Tomoki getting it, and he didn't--not until Monday! Also in answer to prayer, he slept in really late that morning, so was ok to go down very late for his nap as the gathering was at noon and people didn't leave til 3. We had homemade mochi (compressed rice) made in Akihiro's birthday present from me--a mochi maker. It was our third try at it and thanks to Akihiro's research, we were able to keep it really soft and yummy for quite a while! Tomoki loves it dipped in soy sauce. (He's a real "dipper"--will eat almost anything if it has "dip" or "sauce".) We also made pizza and since Akihiro's dad had just caught a big fish (buri) at Hakodate, we had teriyaki fish steaks too--quite the combination--but it was good. Grandpa Ito was so impressed with how Tomoki could blow out his candles on his birthday cake, that he wanted to do it again! He loves the new dump truck and puzzles he got and went to sleep saying, "dump truck" that night. </span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><span class="Apple-style-span" ><div>He is speaking more and more. His little Japanese is so cute. Probably only people whose second language is Japanese can appreciate its cuteness. Japanese people have heard "baby Japanese" a lot before, but I haven't, so it is just priceless when he says, "kore nani?" to ask, "what is this". It is equally cute, though, when he says, "this guy?" I've got to get some more videos of him. We have quite the "conversations" now.</div><div><br /></div><div>Otherwise, we are enjoying nice fall days. My Japanese mom next door has a tree with Chinese dates on them, and I tried to dry some in my oven, but I pretty much burnt them the first time. My second and third batch turned out good though. They are really tasty fresh--Tomoki gobbles them down. They taste a bit like apples.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have been enjoying going to the library as they have a decent English section. "Read book please, mama" is a frequently heard saying at our house. I think he has discovered that if he uses "please," it is so cute and polite, that mama has a hard time turning down his request!</div><div> </div></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><br /></div></div></div>Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-24652170018510914242011-10-19T22:51:00.000-07:002011-10-19T22:51:33.657-07:00Tomoki talking about his birthday party ("Ni sai" means "2 years old" in Japanese)<iframe width="480" height="270" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/e6sdKPN5zSc?fs=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07479597633004698657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-82808464786129199.post-29702586350075400792011-10-04T05:57:00.000-07:002011-10-04T05:57:25.836-07:00It's fall!<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
